Introduction
A leader is someone who encapsulates the capacity to guide people while maintaining their uniqueness. One of the most emphasised attributes of a leader is the ability to be free of fear and self-doubt. One of the most basic survival instincts is leadership. Similarly, team building is one such necessity like leadership skills which are needed in the workplace and during academic years. Team leading leads to the effective execution of work and research. Therefore the purpose of this journal is to develop a reflective essay on leadership and team building.
Reflection on Leadership
Leadership is a skill that most individuals tend to achieve during academic life or professional years to achieve future goals and objectives. Leadership skills developed in academic years helps students to achieve their respective goals during their academic life (Ryan & Deci, 2020). In professional years individuals mostly develop them to be skilled and reach top levels at the workplace. Leadership allows individuals to reach a higher position where one leader can guide us and spread knowledge among individuals. Leadership also allows the ability to build a team or lead a team into success. Leadership means to have the skills to be able to influence people, to motivate people or be able to guide them to achieve individual or collaborative success.
Similarly, I aim to develop leadership skills and abilities. It will help me in my learning or my professional years. It will be a useful skill that I want to know more about or to develop my skills to achieve my personal goals and objectives to be more successful in my upcoming years. This is the skill I wished to develop. I am aware of how important leadership qualities or skill is but I am not aware of the types of leadership styles one possesses or wishes to develop. Therefore the Goleman leadership style theory and model allows readers to go through various leadership styles they wish to develop.
Coercive leadership style- this leadership style suggests that the leaders are very commanding in nature and detective.
Authoritative leadership- this leadership suggests that leaders give their team members a goal or objective for them to follow (Wen, Huang & Hou, 2019). This type of leader just provides them with a goal but does not lead them to achieve it.
Affiliative leadership- this type of leader, are very praised in nature and bereaved to create a positive work environment for its team members.
Democratic leadership- this type of leader is democratic and wants to gain perspectives or value the voice of every member of the team (Salihu, 2019).
Pacesetting leadership style- these types of leaders always tend to set a good example for the team and have high expectations towards team productivity.
Coaching leadership style- these types of leaders believe in individual development and help every employee to achieve success.
Goleman also suggests individuals should not stick to one type of leadership style but should stick to multiple styles (Turchyn, 2021). As I went through all the leadership styles I wished to be a democratic leader and also develop a coaching leadership style. I believe these two leadership styles will work well for me and I will be best suited for it.
Reflection on Team Building
Team Building is the ability to be able to develop a team that is going to work effectively. Team Building is a requirement using the professional years and it is also one of the difficult skills to develop since team building is a difficult process. Team Building leads to the effective completion of work, to ensure growth and high productivity among team members (Shaik & Dhir, 2021). Not just professionally, it is also a requirement during the academic years. Since most individuals are not team players, being able to develop a team is a difficult process.
I, therefore, wish to develop the skill of being a team player and to learn the skills to build a team. With my motive to be an effective leader, I should also learn to build a team effectively. Therefore I will use the necessary model to ensure the effectiveness of my team building. The GRPI model of team effectiveness allows users to help develop a team and ensure its effective management and effectiveness. The dimensions of this model are
Goals- one of the most important requirements for team building is to achieve goals. There is no point in building a team if there are no goals to achieve. The whole purpose of team building is to ensure the people work collaboratively to achieve success. Therefore goals should be made clear.
Roles- when goals are identified it is important to divide responsibilities. Effective roles should be given to every team member (Wen, Huang & Hou, 2019). Therefore each member has individual goals to follow, otherwise, all members would work on one single thing. Therefore everyone should be given specific roles and targets to follow.
Process- this ensures that during the team development every process is being carried out efficiently. The process includes effective brainstorming ideas, resolving conflict, maintaining communications, and collaboration. All these should be taken care of through a defined process or else; it might create more chaos.
Interpersonal relations- teams are also known as a community where people work together to achieve a goal. Conflict may arise on teams. Team members need to communicate efficiently to resolve conflict (Turchyn, 2021). Also ensuring the overall effectiveness and team spirit and positivity which leads to the effective development of teams.
Therefore this is the model I wish to follow to build a team and ensure its effectiveness. Together with my leadership skill, I will be able to develop a good team and help guide them into success.
Conclusion
A leader embodies the ability to lead others while keeping their individuality. The ability to be fearless and self-assured is one of the most recognized qualities of a leader. Leadership is among the most fundamental life instincts. Similarly, team building, like leadership abilities, is a must both in the business and throughout academic years. Team leadership leads to efficient work and research execution. As a result, the goal of this journal was to write a reflective essay about leadership and teamwork.
