Team composition

Teams have been widely accepted in modern organizations as the building blocks where various individuals who have various or similar character compositions become an important criterion for the success of the organization (Harris & Vazire, 2016). Team building exercises help the team members in working together to make up for each other’s weaknesses and build total team strength. The purpose of the team-building exercises is to remove competition and increase collaboration among each other. The diversity within the team is established so that the team can achieve their goals successfully through the special knowledge and skills each and every team member brings along. Diverse teams can be highly creative if managed well (Curseu, 2015). These kinds of team internships help each and every member of a team better choices of career exploration and self-development.

Analysis based on ‘Big Five’ personality trait

The concept of the Big 5 personality trait has been extracted from psychological studies that describe the personalities of an individual through 5 main personality domains which help in understanding the relationship between behaviors and personality of an individual (Harris & Vazire, 2016).

The main big five personality traits are Openness, extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These Big 5 personality traits have been used in collaborative situations by various researchers to determine what strong personality traits one ad to a group dynamic to make the group endeavors successful.

Group Analysis

The target group of analysis is composed of four members who have been provided with a 15 point adjective chart which has to be filled out by the team members by rating their characteristics. For example, the chart has two opposite adjectives on each side and 5 point scale in between like quiet and talkative. They have to analyze their character and tick the appropriate 5 point scale based on how talkative or quiet they are.

The result of the team members based on the Big 5 personality trait would be analyzed and their characters would be explored within the team.

  • Trang – has scored high on the personality traits of openness, extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and emotional stability. A high score for conscientiousness means the person is highly reliable, persistent, and goal-driven. A high score of agreeableness signifies they are helpful and co-operative. A high score on emotional stability means they are optimistic and can handle stress better. A high score in openness means the person is creative and has a good imagination (Zhou, 2018). A high score in extraversion means they are highly compatible with other teammates and enjoy group activities. Overall a high score on all traits except conscientiousness where Trang has mentioned he sometimes feels a bit depressed and is not goal-driven to the maximum extent would not be much of a problem.
  • Minh – Minh has scored incredibly high in emotional stability and can be an asset to the team to handle stress and help others to do so as well. Although he has scored high in all other traits, his score is average in extraversion (Zhou, 2018). This means that he is a more reserved person who has problems with socializing or making small talks. This trait is important in groups and can be developed through efforts by other members.
  • Long – Long has scored high on all traits of emotional stability, agreeableness, and extraversion. This makes Long a very mentally stable and socializing person who can instigate others to communicate. Long has scored average in conscientiousness and openness which shows his lack of acceptance to new experiences as well as being an impulsive decision-maker.
  • Phu – Phu has scored high in conscientiousness and agreeableness. This proves that he is a team player and is caring and honest, as well as goal-driven and persistent (Zhou, 2018). He has scored average in extraversion and emotional stability. It shows his lack of socializing and handling emotional stability in pressure situations. The problematic part with Phu is his lack of openness trait which would inhibit him from taking risks or changing plans in tricky situations.
