Introduction
The Apple Watch, which was already introduced in the market, has various features a watch can perform, which includes an operating system that allows users to contact, text or web search and even connect to devices, download apps and so on. On the other hand, it is also used as a fitness watch that allows users to track activities or even help users contact emergencies when it is needed. Also, there are products in the market with the same possible features creating more competition with Apple and its rivalries. Therefore to develop a competitive edge for their existing product of Apple watch, the design and features should be improved or changed. The modification for the existing product is that the Apple watch does not let users count calories of their food intake, if it allows users to do so therefore a correct estimation can be proved about how many calories to burn and to eat. Other modifications include suggesting users about hospitals or doctors who provide the best treatments according to the user’s ailments. With that, the watch should book an appointment with the permission of the users. These are the modifications that are to be made for the future products of the Apple watch.
Details of the importance of process design on the product
When a product or service is being modified or is yet to be introduced in the market therefore its proper execution should be determined and evaluated. Therefore the importance of process designing is.
- During a product design on the product or service, it is important to determine the process design to identify weak links or any kind of bottleneck that might clog up production or growth of productivity during product execution (Thompson, 2018). Process design helps to identify weak links that might arise during production.
- Process design also allows operations management to understand or to identify any kind of automation in the operations process that will enhance the product designing or manufacturing process (Hsiao & Hsu, 2018). Apple is a very innovative company therefore they have various automation processes and technologies that can aid in the execution of the product.
- The team developed for execution and in designing the product of Apple watch into the market needs to understand process design. To maintain workflow and productivity the team members should be aware of the process involved. This will help employees to understand it better and even help them to pitch ideas that might modify the production process overall.
Aim and objectives of the product using process design
Using the process design the overall aims and objectives of the product are.
- To reduce cost in modifying the existing product of the Apple watch to gain financial profitability when released onto the market.
- To develop a market share of this product on behalf of the company since the whole purpose for product modification is to develop a competitive edge.
- To develop product positioning in the market (Tyhaar, 2021). The product development should satisfy the needs of the customers.
- To develop a target market. The product must be able to attract the target market of the company. As the Apple Watch is designed and modified to become a more accessible product for health-conscious people. Therefore it should be able to attract the target market.
Stages of product development to illustrate design concepts
The stages of product development are.
- The operations management must first brainstorm the ideas of developing a new product for the company or modify the existing products.
- Then it includes defining the product to the higher management to gather perspectives.
- Next, it includes market research. The market research about products with similar features or understanding the customer base. Therefore when the product is released the right customer base is attracted or targeted.
- Then it includes creating a prototype of the product. It is important to create a prototype to understand the basic appearance and future issues that can be avoided (Cobos Gil, 2020).
- Then it requires us to compile the specifications. The specifications are to be particularly added to the product and should be compiled into the product. It also includes the process of reevaluating or reviewing the product before it is produced on a mass basis.
- Then comes the factory samples where the manufacturing of pre-production samples are created (Hsiao & Hsu, 2018). This is done for testing before it is originally introduced in the market.
- Once the samples are received it is then tested. The testing of a product is an important process. This is the stage where the company identifies faults or drawbacks that might arise and gathers feedback.
- Once the testing is done it then should be sent to factories for its mass production.
- The last stage includes maintaining quality assurance. The operations management must ensure all the products are of high quality and the quality is maintained throughout the production. Then it is released into the market.
Analysis of the impact of performance objectives on the design.
Performance Objectives are the objectives that determine the productivity and focus of employees and direct them in developing the product and achieving company goals and objectives. The impacts it has on the design is. The employee research and innovative ideas will help the modification of the existing product. It is employee productivity that speeds up the production process (Thompson, 2018). Highly motivated employees can speed up production since they are motivated to achieve the desired outcomes. Employees’ determination can help companies with product quality assurance. The proper research of products and markets by the employees can help develop a new product for the company into the market. Every employee value is counted since all of them directly contribute to the development of the product. Employees’ unproductive nature and lack of engagement can disrupt the product design or developing process.
Conclusion
In conclusion, a product design or modification requires a series of stages or processes which are to be followed by the operations manager. The operations manager should be capable of handling any operational related activities which include brainstorming ideas for product quality assurance and development. The purpose of this report was to introduce a product modification for Apple then determine the importance of process design and aims and objectives of the product. Also a discussion of the stages in product development and analysing the impact of performance objectives on the product designing.
