The main purpose or objective of this research paper is to analyze the Biography of the most popular theorist namely Joyce Travelbee. In this paper, detailed background and educational information about Joyce would be given. Along with this, the theory and principles proposed by her will also be explained. Moreover, the conccpets, principles and ideas of nursing would be discussed to attain the objectives.
Joyce Travelbee was an American psychiatric nurse and known for her work as nursing theorist. She was born in the year 1926, USA. She completed her Bachelor of Science in nursing degree from Louisiana State University. She completed her master in nursing in the year 1959 from Yale University. Along with this, it should also be noted down that, she worked with a number of hospitals as a psychiatric nurse. She mainly paid attention on psychiatric nursing. A number of valuable articles, books and journals were published by Travelbee in 1963. She was the founder of human to human relationship model of nursing and now this model is most popular in the area of nursing. This model was based on her idea that profession called a humanistic revolution (Basinska, Wellens, Simon, Zeller, Kressig, & Zúñiga, 2021).
According to Joyce, nursing must be proficient via human relationship that starts with the original encounter. She believed that patents should treated with care, sympathy and empathy in order to improve the heal care outcomes. She stated that the relationship among a nurse and patient is not only important but also essential to successful patient care. In the same way, without developing a strong and positive relationship with the patient, a nurse can’t fulfill his or her personal and professional goals and objectives effectively.
It was also believed by hear that the nurse-patient relationship should be developed by an interaction process. In the words of Travelbee, in order to develop strong relationship with the patients, the nursing staff should follow the five phases such as: the original encounter, the visibility of personal or emerging identities, empathy, sympathy, and the establishment of mutual understanding and a rapport (Furunes, Kaltveit, & Akerjordet, 2018).
Moreover, this nursing and patient relationship theory proposed by Joyce can be considered both objective and subjective. In the present time, this theory is used in nursing areas and helps the healthcare professionals as well as nursing staff to develop specific, long term and positive relationship with their patients in order to enhance quality of life. She also believed that, a nurse should do everything that she or he can do to improve the health of patients. She also said that, by developing relationship with the patients, nursing people can attain the purpose of nursing. It is because; both patients and nurse is the human being and linked with each other directly or indirectly. Nurses should try to develop a direct interaction as well as communication in order to develop relationship successfully (Willman, Bjuresäter, & Nilsson, 2021).
She also stated that, a nurse is not responsible to do day to day healthcare task but also she is accountable for educating the patients and their family members. For case, according to her, a nurse should use specific nursing strategies and practices in order to help the patients in order to avoid unmet stress. Moreover, it is also important to know that, the theory developed and proposed by Joyce has major impact on health care as well as nursing. In her views, nursing need a humanistic transformation. On the other hand, Interpersonal Aspects of Nursing Model was also anticipated by her. In addition to this, she encouraged the objective of nursing family or individual in preventing of illness (Perry, Xu, Gallagher, Nicholls, Sibbritt, & Duffield, 2018).
At the same time, the nursing theory given by Joyce is totally based on existential humanity. It means humans are continually face choices and conflicts and responsible the choice that a nurse or health care professional makes. According to her, all the individuals are unique so a nurse should help a patient. It is because, a patient need support and care from other so nursing people should provide needed help to them in an effective and proper manner. Moreover, it is also found that, there are a number of specific nursing principles, norms and standards were provided by her in order to connect with the ill persons.
A specific conceptual framework was developed by her that was based on the patient and therapeutic relationships. In addition to this, she also believed that, nursing people or healthcare professional should provide empathetic care to their patients in order to enhance patient report outcomes. This is also important to improve patient satisfaction. So, she suggested that this theory and principles must be addressed and used in every health profession to improve overall health care outcomes (Pérez-Fuentes, Molero Jurado, Gázquez Linares & Oropesa Ruiz, 2018).
She also explained and stated that, nursing people should not be afraid to show their concerns and interest and work best to help the ill people by proper support and help. Along with this, she also suggested that, the healthcare institutions should encourage and motivate the nurses so that she or he can give best to improve the healthcare outcomes. Moreover, nurses should help the patients in maintaining the hope by avoiding hopelessness. As per her theory, nurses should have more skills so that he or she can anticipate relative’s likelihood. Additionally, a nurse is also responsible to define the concept of hope, suffering etc (Perry, Xu, Gallagher, Nicholls, Sibbritt, & Duffield, 2018). .
It was also believed by her that, nurse-patient relationship should be considered as a primary and core of nursing practice. So, it should be developed effectively for the purpose of well-being and health of patient. She also said that, trust, respect, Professional Intimacy, Empathy, mutual understanding etc. are the main factors that play key role in developing a strong relationship with the patient. So, these factors must be considered in order to develop relationship in the healthcare settings. On the other hand, it is also found that, nurses must also focus on effective communication as well as information sharing in order to develop the relationship and understand the ill-person’s point of view. In the same way, nurses must understand the ideas, preferences and needs of their patient via effective communication to develop the relationship (Pérez-Fuentes, Molero Jurado, Gázquez Linares & Oropesa Ruiz, 2018). .
In her theory, she also stated that, nurses should understand the environment of their patients and it will enable them to feel safe and build confidence. Hence, effective ways, methods and practices are used to develop relationship with the patients in an effective and proper manner. She also believed that, paying attention, showing respects, staying positive, being present, and active listings etc. are the major ways that should be used to build Good Nurse-Patient Relationship (Willman, Bjuresäter, & Nilsson, 2021). In conclusion, it can be said that, Joyce Travelbee had proposed various nursing theories to help the patients and nursing staff. In the present time, her theories are used to build and develop good relationships.
